60 Seconds with Arnold Leung – Appnovation

Arnold Leung, AppnovationArnold Leung founded Appnovation in 2007 after graduating from the University of British Columbia. Starting out as a website development company, Leung has expanded the business offering to include web and mobile applications using open source technologies such as Drupal, Alfresco and SproutCore.

In 2010 Leung was included in Business in Vancouver’s Top Forty Under 40 list and in 2011 BDC’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year and a top 5 finalist at Small Business BC's Successful You Awards.

Who is your mentor? 
Steve Curtis , founder of ZAG Group and board member of Take a Hike Youth at Risk Foundation. He started his first company at the age of 19 with a budget of $500 and with no external funding he grew the firm to just under $5 million in annual revenue in less than five years. In 2006 he became the youngest winner of the Business in Vancouver, Top 40 Under 40 Award. 

Which business leader do you most admire and why? 
Thomas Sutherland, the Founder of HSBC. I believe that he’s built a company that has a solid foundation, not on hype and speculation. 

What has been the most valuable piece of advice you have been given? 
You cannot win without a good team. 

If you could go back in time and invent a product or service – what would you create? 
I would invent a software platform that allows for the creation of mobile apps that works on every device. 

If you weren’t in the industry you are in today, what would you be doing?
Working as an investment banker. 

If you could have a super power, which would you choose? 
The ability to learn something new instantly. 

Who or what inspires you? 
Companies that have long-term stable growth. 

What has been your greatest success as an entrepreneur or business leader? Starting a company at the age of 21, straight out of school, and growing it to a 35 person company in just four years. 

What has been your biggest challenge as an entrepreneur or business leader? Learning what management really is.
