Before registering your business, you should consider the different options available to you. From a legal point of view, there are three common types of businesses: Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, and Corporation. Each structure has different and important implications for liability, taxation, and succession.

A corporate search is required if you are suing a company incorporated in British Columbia (usually you can tell if you are dealing with an incorporated company because its name will end in “Limited” (“Ltd.”), “Corporation” (“Corp.”), or “Incorporated” (“Inc.”). To get the correct name and address of the registered office you must request a company search and include 2 copies of this document with your small claims court filing. This document can be obtained in person from Small Business BC at 601 West Cordova St, Vancouver. The fee for a company search can be paid by cash, debit, Visa or MasterCard. The registered office may not be the place where the company carries on business, but the registered office address is the one you will put on the notice of claim. The corporate search also lists the names and addresses of the company's directors. You must file a copy of the company search in the registry when you file your notice of claim. Retain your receipt as the cost of the search can be added to your claim.
